Protecting Jewelry from Saltwater: The Seaside Summer Guide

Some jewelry is made to stay at home, behind glass, taken out twice a year. Ours is not. The lightweight, hand-finished pieces you wear in summer are made to live on sun-warmed skin – at the market, in the waves, under the fairy lights in the evening. But the sea, however beautiful, is harsh on metals and stones. Learning to protect jewelry from saltwater is what allows you to wear the things you love all season long without seeing them dull.

What salt and sun really do

Seawater is salt, minerals, and a faint trace of everything the ocean carries, and it is silently corrosive. On silver, it accelerates oxidation, leaving that gray-black patina. On gold plating, it wears away the thin surface layer until the metal underneath shows through. Salt crystals get into tiny crevices around stones and clasps, dry there, and act like fine sand against the settings.

The sun and the rest of the beach do the rest. Heat and sweat loosen the glues of glued stones; sunscreens and oils leave a dull residue; pool chlorine is even more aggressive than the sea. Knowing how to protect jewelry from saltwater means understanding that damage is almost never a single dramatic moment: it’s the slow accumulation of salt, friction, and chemistry over an entire happy summer. The good news is that the same slowness makes it easy to prevent.

Small rituals to protect jewelry from saltwater

The kindest rule is also the simplest: take them off before going into the water. A thirty-second pause to slip rings and a delicate necklace into a pouch saves you hours of polishing and the disappointment of a piece lost in the waves. If a swim catches you unprepared, rinse everything in fresh water as soon as you get out: fresh water washes away the salt before it settles.

Build a small end-of-day ritual. In the evening, gently rinse your jewelry, then dry each piece completely with a soft cloth; trapped moisture is what oxidation prefers. Apply perfume, sunscreen, and mist first, and let your skin absorb them before putting on jewelry – “last on, first off” keeps oils and salt away from the metal. Store pieces separately in soft pouches so they don’t scratch each other, and slip an anti-tarnish strip with silver. None of this takes more than a minute, and that minute is the whole secret.

Caring for natural materials and handmade pieces

Not every summer jewel is metal. Threads, beads, shells, freshwater pearls, and natural stones require an even lighter hand. Pearls and porous stones should never be immersed in salt or sprayed with perfume: wipe them with a slightly damp cloth and let them dry flat. Strung and beaded pieces don't like to get soaked, which over time weakens the thread: keep them for the dinner table rather than the sea.

It’s the same ethic we put into everything at Bohemia: things made slowly, by hand, deserve to be cherished slowly, by hand. A handcrafted piece is not disposable. Cared for with a few quiet gestures, it preserves the memory of the summers you wore it – and shines brighter every year.

If a piece has already dulled

Don't despair over a necklace that has turned gray or a ring that has lost its shine: much of summer damage is reversible with a gentle hand. For oxidized silver, a soft polishing cloth and a little patience bring back the glow; avoid abrasive pastes on platings or delicate pieces, as they can permanently damage the finish. A soft toothbrush and lukewarm, slightly soapy water lift sunscreen and salt residue from crevices, as long as there are no glued stones or pearls.

Always dry thoroughly afterwards, and let the pieces air for a few minutes before putting them back in the pouch. And know the limit: re-setting a loose stone or re-plating worn gold is a jeweler's job, not a home remedy. Knowing how to protect jewelry from saltwater also means knowing when a piece deserves professional care instead of a hopeful rub.

A little care, a long love

The pieces that matter most are the ones that travel with us — sea in the morning, candlelight in the evening. Protecting them from saltwater is not fussiness: it's affection, the same care you would give to anything you want to preserve. Rinse, dry, put away, repeat, and your summer jewelry will shine for many seasons to come.
